Five Years of Japanamac
21 May 2008 |It’s a little late, but this past February was the 5th anniversary of Japanamac! Oops… Sorry Japanamac! Anyways, to celebrate the occasion how about some fun (and interesting) facts about Japanamac?

Fact: Japanamac’s first post was on February 16th, 2003. You can see the first post here.
Fact: The site was developed and produced entirely by my good friend Noel Jackson of eight6. He still helps me with the site from time to time!
Fact: Japanamac’s name is actually a combination of Japan and Mac, as in Macintosh (Apple) computers. Japanamac was originally intended to be a technology blog focusing on Apple products in Japan. It didn’t really turn out that way, though. It was pretty much a blog to keep my family and friends informed about my life in Japan right from the beginning!
Fact: I’ve lost most of my statistic data for the past 5 years, but it seems that we get an average of about 50 unique viewers everyday.
Fact: I almost always change the post date and time when I do an update. It’s not to trick anybody or fool RSS readers or anything like that. I’m just trying to keep chronological order.
Fact: I have to approve all comments made on the site before they will appear. The reason is because I got sick of ads and spam showing up in the comments section. Believe me! There were a lot! Anyways, I’m thinking about moving the comments over to a password based system so that trusted users can post right away using passwords.
Fact: Someday I was hoping to move Japanamac’s content away from personal stories and over to more general (and interesting) stories about Japan. I doubt that will ever happen though.
Fact: I’m not sure when we will come back to live in America, but I have actually played around with a new logo just in case. Amerimac, anybody?
Fact: The modern version of Japanamac is made with WordPress just in case you were wondering.
Fact: At least one kanji in the “Kanji of the Day” section at the bottom of the page is incorrect. The problem is, I can’t figure out which one it is! Doh!
Fact: During our last major overhaul of Japanamac it seems that a bunch of text got messed up by mistake. If you see any strange text just send us a mail and we will fix it! Thanks! For example, apostrophes got changed into this: ’
Fact: I have made many friends from all over the world because of Japanamac. It seems that many people are really interested in Japan and wonder what daily life in Japan is like. I always get great questions and I’m happy that people seem to enjoy the stories on Japanamac. We hope that we can continue for many years to come.

Five years. Wow. I can’t believe it. I’ve loved being able to keep up with what you’ve been doing in Japan.
We need to do some “spring cleaning” around here! Don’t worry about the comment spam, we’ll get that straightened away.

Happy belated 5th birthday to Japanamac
when I first saw your blog title, I thought it was a Japan-McDonalds hybrid, until you clarified its origins in this post! Heh, my bad. When you had a whole list of facts about your blog, I was searching for myths - since facts and myths come together as a pair.
In case you’re looking for a decent spam protection, you can always try the default Akismet service (but you’ll need a Wordpress API key though), or if you really want to go hardcore, try Spam Karma. Regarding the weird, unexpected display of unicode characters, I suspect two problematic lines in your wp-config.php. I think there’s a thread on Wordpress support forums for a solution if the problem lies with the file. It worked for me!

Congratulations, I’m an occasional contributor to those 50 visits a day. You probably don’t remember me but we used to work at a certain mall together, talking game soundtracks and the like. (and oddly enough, I’m thinking about buying a Mini too)
Glad to see that thing are going so well for you, drop me a line if you want to catch up sometime.
