Vista on Mac

31 Dec 2007 | Comments Off

Wow… I just installed Windows Vista Ultimate on my Mac using Boot Camp. I know, I know!!! Vista??? Well, you might blame it a little bit on curiosity, but the fact is that I need a home copy of Windows for work. Might as well be Vista, right?

The installation process wasn’t so bad, but what came next was kinda unexpected - driver hell! I can’t believe the hoops that Windows users have to go through to make their systems run! I mean, really!!! Us Mac users are spoiled! Everything just works on a Mac! Not so true in Windows Vista. Anyways, after hours of searching for the proper video and sound drivers, I had everything working pretty well.

Pretty well, that is, until I encountered some interesting activation problems when I installed VMware Fusion on my Mac so I could run Windows side by side with Leopard. I actually had to call Microsoft activation support to get the problem resolved! They were super nice and helpful, which was really unexpected, but the whole idea of activation is unsettling. In the end, Fusion is working pretty well, even if it is a little creepy to see Vista integrated with Leopard. It is super cool that you can run Vista full screen in one of Leopard’s Spaces though. That’s sure to dazzle anyone who sees it!

Next I discovered the Windows Experience index. It seems kinda silly. Is it to make people feel the need to upgrade their systems? Is it so people with fast systems can brag? WTF? You can download similar programs like X-Bench for Mac, but it’s not part of the operating system. At least my Mac Pro scored a 4.9 on the index! Ha!

In the end, I think that I realized what separates Mac from Windows. Windows feels like work. By that I don’t mean that it’s better at spreadsheets or word processing than Mac. What I mean is that using and maintaing Windows feels like a lot of work. It’s like you have your fingers plugging up holes in a dam, but more and more holes keep on popping up. I haven’t even thought about viruses and spyware yet.

I didn’t really mean for this post to become a rant just before the new year, but I really had to get my feelings out. As for Windows Vista users… My advice for a great new years resolution starts by clicking here.

Yesterday Azusa and I celebrated our 4th wedding anniversary! It’s amazing how 4 years can go by so fast! It seems like just yesterday that we got married!

To celebrate our anniversary we actually stayed home and cooked an awesome meal together. It was really relaxing and probably our best anniversary ever! Here are some pics:
