More Page Updates
28 Nov 2003 | Comments (4)Sorry for the lack of updates lately… Noel Jackson and I were cooking up some improvements to Japanamac. Take a look around… Most of the bugs have been squashed and you’ll see some new features as well. My favorite new feature is Kanji of the Day… You can find it at the bottom of the main page. Kanji of the Day is basically for my readers to learn a little Japanese when my updates get kinda boring… Tee hee.
Anyways, every time you reload the main page a new Kanji complete with a simple English definition should appear. These entries also have both hiragana and romanji readings as well. The entries are pretty simple, but hey! Simple is good right?
Anyways, enjoy!
David and Goliath
12 Nov 2003 | Comments (1)A few days ago, I upgraded to a new camera. Probably because I broke my Kodak DX4900 when I was shooting in the rain near Hikone Castle… Anyways, I decided to go with the semi-pro Canon EOS Digital Rebel. The Digital Rebel is a whopping 6.3 mega pixel digital SLR camera. So what does that mean, you ask? It means the camera works just like a traditional film camera, but with all the benefits of digital. The Digital Rebel is a truly a monster compared to my old Kodak… Really, it’s not even really fair to compare the two… The Digital Rebel is such a monster that I think I’ll refer to it as “Goliath” from now on…
But, like so many other things, even Goliath has to have an opposite. Enter my other new camera, the Canon SD10… Unlike Goliath, the SD10 is small and lightly featured… It’s a 4.0 mega pixel camera, so it’s a good quality camera for shooting everyday stuff.
Now, why did I buy two cameras? Simple… After one day of intense shooting with Goliath I realized the camera’s one disadvantage. Size. Goliath, as the name implies, is a big sucker! Goliath is not really suitable for carrying around just anywhere. Especially in busy areas where bumps could mean disaster… The SD10 is a little smaller than a pack of cigarettes, so I can always take it with me. Well, I’m feeling pretty corny today so I guess I’ll call the SD10 “David” from now on… Gotta stay with the whole Goliath theme, you know…
Anyways, I figured that between the two cameras I’d have the best of both worlds… Unrivaled, blow-your-mind professional quality and go anywhere, anytime convenience. Here’s a picture… It’s hard to show the contrast in size, but it gives you an idea…

Culture Note:
The Canon EOS Digital Rebel “Goliath” is called the Canon Kiss Digital in Japan… What a sissy name! I think Goliath is much more appropriate, don’t you? The Canon SD10 “David” also has a different name here. It’s called the Canon IXY Digital L… Why L? I have no idea… All I know is that IXY is pronounced, “Ick-see” in Japanese…
Delays
11 Nov 2003 | Comments (3)I’ve been waiting so patiently for Internet at my new house, but this is getting ridiculous!!! It’s been about three weeks now and NTT just informed me that my Internet won’t be turned on until next week. Next week??? What?
I really don’t see what the problem is… It should only take a few days.
What this and many other situations really boil down to is bureaucracy… It’s hard to get anything done fast in Japan because there are so many departments that have to have their cut of the action… Why? I wish I knew… Anyways, this form of Japanese bureaucracy leads to loads of paperwork and lots of miscommunication… The simplest things instantly become huge, complicated problems. What does that mean for the average consumer? Delays, delays and more delays… Poo…
